What a codec does #

A codec compresses audio to reduce the data required for transmission. MP3 is extremely compatible, AAC is often more efficient at the same bitrate, and other formats can offer further advantages while being less universally supported. Codec choice is therefore a balance between quality, bandwidth and compatibility.

What bitrate measures #

Bitrate describes how many bits are transferred per second. For a constant stream it is also the simplest way to estimate data usage. 128 kbit/s is not a direct quality measurement: different encoders can produce different results at the same bitrate.

Music and speech #

Speech can remain intelligible at low bitrates, while complex stereo music needs more information. A talk station may prioritize efficiency whereas a music station may choose 128 or 192 kbit/s. Bitrate should therefore be interpreted together with content and codec.

Real compatibility #

A web player depends on codecs supported by the browser and operating system. A global directory should not promise universal compatibility when it cannot verify it. Choosing consciously #

On mobile, a lighter stream may be preferable; at home on stable Wi‑Fi, a richer stream may provide more detail. The best choice balances perceived quality, reliability and the amount of data actually available.
