The essential formula #
Data use mainly depends on stream bitrate. A 128 kbit/s stream transfers roughly 57.6 MB per hour before small protocol overhead; 64 kbit/s is about half and 256 kbit/s is about double. A practical formula is bitrate × seconds ÷ 8. You do not need to know the codec for the arithmetic, although efficient codecs can deliver similar quality with fewer bits.
Realistic examples #
At 48 kbit/s an hour is about 21.6 MB, at 96 kbit/s about 43.2 MB, at 128 kbit/s about 57.6 MB and at 192 kbit/s about 86.4 MB. Four hours a day at 128 kbit/s can exceed 6.5 GB in a month. Real usage can be slightly higher because of protocols, reconnects and metadata.
Wi‑Fi, mobile data and roaming #
On Wi‑Fi the limit is often irrelevant, while mobile data or roaming makes it important. If you listen to home-country radio while abroad, check your plan and consider a lower-bitrate stream. The station’s geographical origin does not determine data usage: bitrate and connection time do.
Quality versus efficiency #
More bitrate does not automatically mean a better experience. AAC can sound convincing at lower bitrates than MP3, and speech programming needs less bandwidth than high-fidelity music. Universe Radio surfaces codec and bitrate when available so listeners can make that trade-off more transparently.
Reducing data use #
Prefer Wi‑Fi for long sessions, choose lighter streams when available and stop playback when you are not listening. If a station provides multiple endpoints, the lower-bitrate one can be useful on mobile. A player should also avoid aggressive reconnect loops that waste data without improving listening.
