How we verify radio station reliability and quality

First-party reliability #
An external catalogue is a starting point, not the final decision. Universe Radio calculates a Reliability Score from recent checks, HTTPS, bitrate, codec, homepage, usage signals and observed failures. The score is first-party because the final decision is applied and historically stored by our own system.
Three tiers for different purposes #
`INDEX` identifies pages reliable and complete enough to be candidates for indexing. `USEFUL_NO_INDEX` keeps a station useful in the interface without turning it into an SEO landing page. `THIN/UI_ONLY` keeps a record only when operationally necessary. Rendering and sitemaps use exactly the same tier.
High-confidence duplicates #
Name similarity is not enough for a 301. A station redirect is allowed only with strong evidence, such as an identical stream or a matching combination of name, country and official domain. Less certain pairs remain candidates for observation and are not consolidated automatically.
Conservative enrichment #
When a valid official homepage exists, the system may read a small amount of public metadata such as description or references, with a timeout and size limit. Every enrichment stores source URL, timestamp and provenance. No text is invented when the source is not sufficiently clear.
Downgrade and recovery #
Reliability is not permanent. Repeated failures, prolonged absence or stream degradation can automatically lower a tier; new positive checks allow recovery. This keeps sitemaps from filling with pages that no longer provide a real listening experience.
