Two completely different networks #

FM uses terrestrial transmitters and local radio spectrum, while internet radio travels over IP networks and can cross continents. That changes coverage, infrastructure dependence and discovery. FM is immediate inside its coverage area; internet streaming dramatically expands reach but requires a data connection.

Coverage and availability #

An FM signal degrades with distance, obstacles and interference. An online stream can be reached anywhere with adequate connectivity, unless the broadcaster applies geo restrictions or other limits. For travellers and expatriates, internet radio makes it possible to keep a daily connection with home.

Delay and reliability #

FM has very low latency. Streaming adds buffers, CDNs and encoding, so it may arrive seconds later. Larger buffers can make playback smoother on unstable networks, but an internet outage, expired endpoint or overloaded server can stop the stream completely.

Quality and bitrate #

FM and streaming have different artefacts. Online, codec and bitrate are major quality factors. A well-encoded AAC stream can be efficient while very low-bitrate MP3 may lose detail. The broadcaster’s audio chain and the listener’s device still matter as well.

Which should you choose? #
